My answer to "why would anyone pay for radio?" is that my (and in my experience most) local radio sucks. XM's programming diversity insures that at any moment, I can almost always find something I enjoy listening to. To me, that's actually worth the $14 or so a month. I found Brian's comparisons to Clear Channel pretty interesting, especially since I complete agree with his opinions on Clear Channels' effect on local radio. However, I have to differ with his comment on XM being "basically XM". My experience also does not line up with his "same 38 songs" comment. I have heard more repeats than I would have expected, but they are only occasional, which is a VAST improvement over local radio. What I think concerns most of us as subscribers about the proposed merger between Sirius and XM (that was the original discussion, right? *grin*) is how much pricing and programming will change and whether anyone will have to buy new hardware. Of course, the first thing is that they'll have to get past the governmental regulation that specifically prevents them from merging (on anti-competitive grounds). Great podcast. Keep it up!
