Did Microsoft Kill Our Zune Jokes?

Bad news for MP3 comedians everywhere … according to this engadget story, Microsoft is killing the Zune hardware and moving to a software platform. This would turn the Zune ‘brand’ into an add-on for the Microsoft mobile phone OS. I guess we can hold all of our Zune jokes for the next generation of Nokia phones running WP7.

Yes, we have recorded a new episode recently.

No, Brian hasn’t had a chance to edit it yet. Life has been busy at the GeekFarm, complicated by our good friend Jeff McClure going into the hospital after a bad motorcycle accident. Jeff is responsible for the audio engineering on several live episodes, and has been a close friend of ours long before there was a WhatTheCast. I would rather the universe focus on his recovery than our silly media project.

Still, new-ish episode coming soon. Stay tuned …

Yes, you read that correctly … a tauntaun race. Since tauntauns don’t actually exist, it’s an old-fashioned sack race in ThinkGeek Tauntaun Sleeping Bags.

Crispy and Brian from WhatTheCast host this epic event at GMX 2010, which becomes even more epic when we discover there aren’t enough sacks to go around. The solution: INVISIBLE TAUNTAUN

Ok kids … pack your kilts, stick some gears on old waistcoats and find those Vulcan ears. Geek Media Expo 2010 is only days away (October 22-24) and WhatTheCast is ready to take it over.

Saturday brings the madness that is Race of the Tauntauns … a sack race using sleeping bags that look like tauntauns from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (you know, the movie that didn’t suck). Contestants can use the ThinkGeek edition sleeping bag or their own creation, but they must complete the course while avoiding our twisted obstacles (cue evil laugh). Contestants also have to survive Crispy and Brian’s sportscaster commentary, adding another degree of difficulty to the event.

The live WhatTheCast recording is at noon on Sunday (Oct 24th), so you have plenty of time to grab brunch before we recap a fantastic geek weekend. We’re also hanging out on the “Geek Journalism” panel (Saturday at 5:00pm).

Stephen brings the science (SCIENCE!) to the show on two panels … “Science of the Whedonverse” (Saturday at 2:00pm) and his awesome “There Ain’t No Stealth in Space” presentation (Sunday at 1:00pm).

We’ve also got friends along for the ride. Garret Wang, Voyager crew member and director of Dragon*Con Star Trek programming, is bringing his personal brand of fun to the show. GMX also added the Sci-Fi Janitors (Bob and Carl) to the guest list (if you don’t clean up after yourselves they will call you out … you have been warned). It’s a great guest list so there’s something to do when we’re not on stage.

Foreclosure for the Dollhouse

Our listeners know Stephen has issues with the final episodes of Dollhouse, now he shares them with other fans on this special (and quite profane) episode.

Dragon*Con 2009 in Atlanta, GA – Sunday, Sept. 6 @ 10:00AM (Hilton Room 204). Part of the fantastic Dragon*Con Podcasting Track. Come for the podcasting, stay for the rest of this sci-fi spectacle.

Geek Media Expo (GMX) in Nashville, TN – October 2-4. Panel details TBD, but our live podcast is likely on Saturday, October 3rd. This is a very affordable first-year convention run by the folks behind MTAC.

Times are subject to change, so check each convention’s website & schedule for more information.

Doug Price, the voice of Dr. Floyd (and Dr. Doug and Ensign Tim Porary, to name a few) from The Radio Adventures of Dr. Floyd did just that, being one of the hundreds of victims of the CA fires. While he is fully insured (yay), there are red tape nightmares to get through before he gets money to rebuild. As of now, he has what he took with him to dinner the night his house burned down, and Dr. Floyd Industries is taking up donations to help him in the interim between now and when insurance comes through. You can get an exclusive episode of Dr. Floyd if you donate $5 or more.

But I’m upping the stakes. If you forward me (mightymur at gmail) your PayPal receipt that proves you donated $10 or more to Doug Price (remove any personal info, I just need to see that you donated $10 or more), I’ll send you an original audio short story set in the PFK universe, released only to those who donated!
